Frequently Asked Questions

APACHE II (Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II) is used to assess severity of illness in ICU patients and predict hospital mortality. Higher scores indicate greater severity.
Scores ≤9 indicate low risk (~8% mortality), 10–19 moderate risk (~25%), 20–29 high risk (~55%), and ≥30 very high risk (~85%).
Patients with severe organ system insufficiency or immunocompromised state get 5 points if non-operative or emergency post-op, and 2 points if elective post-op.
APACHE II was validated in medical and surgical ICU patients. It is less accurate in specific populations like burns, cardiac surgery or paediatrics.
